Rhinoplasty (rhinoplasty)

Rhinoplasty (rhinoplasty) is a surgical procedure that involves reshaping the nose.

At Rizk Plastic Surgery in Sydney rhinoplasty can be a cosmetic procedure performed by a surgeon to improve the appearance of the nose, or a medically necessary procedure to improve nasal breathing, or a combination of both. The nose is easily susceptible to injury and damage from sporting and other vigorous activities.

When injury occurs, the nose can be left misshapen and cause discomfort or difficulty in breathing. The solution to these problems could be rhinoplasty, more commonly known as a rhinoplasty. This is a common procedure both men and women undertake to correct breathing issues, repair the nose or reshape the nose to compliment the face. The goal of rhinoplasty (nose lift) surgery is to create a natural looking shape that compliments your face. If you are ready to discuss your options, give Dr Rizk and his friendly team a call to book a consultation for rhinoplasty in Sydney today!

Dr Rizk advocates the National Law and Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) guidelines that any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that seeks to correct, refine, or augment the appearance and function of the nose. It is one of the most commonly sought-out forms of plastic surgery. These operations are generally classified as either reconstructive or cosmetic.

Reconstructive

These rhinoplasty procedures seek to repair the damage that has been done to the nose or remedy a preexisting nasal deformity. Common situations like this are with people who have suffered a broken nose or have a deviated septum. These conditions can impair the flow of air through the nose, making it difficult to breathe. Further, they may significantly alter the form of the nose giving you a less-than-ideal appearance. If you have experienced trauma to your nose that has damaged its shape, structure, or function, you may need reconstructive rhinoplasty surgery.

Cosmetic

When a person is unsatisfied with the look of their nose but has not suffered from damage or natural deficiency, their rhinoplasty would fall into the cosmetic category. Cosmetic procedures can help reduce the size of the nose, refine the shape of the bridge and nostrils, or provide any combination of aesthetic effects.

What are the Benefits of Rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty can address a variety of negative conditions. It is a highly customizable procedure, so your surgery plan can be crafted to deal with your specific needs and goals.

Common conditions that rhinoplasty can treat include:

  • A nose that is oversized or too small in relation to the face
  • Bridge that is too wide
  • Nostrils that are too large, small, or misaligned
  • Visible humps or depressions in the bridge
  • Enlarged, drooping, upturned, or hooked nasal tip
  • A nose that asymmetrical
  • Deviated septum
  • Other structural defects that impair breathing

During your consultation, Sydney plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Rizk will listen closely to your concerns and thoroughly examine your nose. Together, you will work with him to craft a surgical plan that appropriately addresses your condition and seeks to achieve all of your goals.

Types of Rhinoplasty Procedures

When determining the course of your treatment plan, there are several types of rhinoplasty procedures that Dr. Rizk will consider. Choosing the technique that is right for you will take into consideration your nose’s current condition, your medical state, and your goals for the surgery.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Conversely, this version of rhinoplasty does not make any incisions in the outer skin of the nose. Instead, all incisions are made inside the nose.

Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty

This approach utilizes piezoelectric instruments to reshape the bones and cartilage of the nose without the need for any incisions at all. This technique requires a high degree of surgical skill, but recovery can be substantially faster.

Open Rhinoplasty

This technique involves opening up the skin of the nose to allow for the reconstruction of the underlying structures of bone and cartilage. A small incision is made on the columella (skin between the nostrils) that allows for more ready access to the underlying tissue.

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

Using fat grafting, dermal fillers, or neuromodulators, the shape of the nose can be adjusted in minor but significant ways. Sunken areas can be filled in and the tip of the nose can be reshaped very effectively using this technique. Also, wrinkles or creases around the nose can be reduced or eliminated. Advantages include a substantial reduction in associated pain and recovery time; however, results may not last as long as with a surgical technique.

Your Rhinoplasty Recovery

Everyone’s recovery experience with rhinoplasty is different. The type of technique you undergo, along with your practices during recovery and your body’s unique composition will all impact the speed and ease of your recovery. Before your operation, Dr. Rizk will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions and any prescriptions you will need.

In general, rhinoplasty will require substantial recovery time. Immediately after your procedure, split or bandages may be placed on the nose and a splint or packing used inside secure the structure and absorb any bleeding or fluid leakage. This dressing may need to be changed periodically during this time. It is generally recommended that you keep your nose elevated and refrain from touching your nose as much as possible. Ice packs or cold compresses are usually recommended around the cheeks and eyes to reduce swelling.

General guidelines include:

  • Sneezing with an open mouth
  • Refrain from blowing your nose for the first two weeks
  • Avoid excessive chewing
  • Keep the inside of your nose moist with saline spray and/or petroleum jelly
  • Minimize the motion of the upper lip, i.e. smiling or making other facial expressions
  • Brush your teeth gently and utilize only toothbrushes with soft bristles
  • If you wear glasses, keep them off the bridge of the nose
  • Avoid more strenuous activities, like exercise, physical labor, and even sexual activity

Rhinoplasty FAQs

Rhinoplasty is a major surgery, so some amount of discomfort is to be expected. During surgery, patients are typically fully sedated and do not feel anything. However, patients often experience some pain during their recovery. Dr. Rizk will give you prescriptions for the appropriate anti-inflammatory and pain-management medications to make your recovery as painless as possible.

It is normal for your face to change somewhat as you age. However, the major results of your rhinoplasty should last the rest of your life.

Some scarring is possible with rhinoplasty, but it is usually minimal and barely visible. With an open rhinoplasty, scarring may form on the columella (structure separating the nostrils) but it remains almost invisible. In closed, ultrasonic, or non-surgical rhinoplasty, no incisions are made so scars cannot form.

In the vast majority of cases, the answer is “no.” When adjustments are made to the tip of your nose, it is normal for upper lip motion to be affected somewhat, but the smile generally remains completely intact. With a skilled surgeon like Dr. Rizk, you can rest knowing that your smile will remain bright.
