Clichés can be useful. One of my favourites is forewarned is forearmed. No doubt prior knowledge and informed consent of possible dangers or problems give one an advantage. You might be fortunate to have a reliable friend who has had a breast augmentation or you might of be a google master who has done their research. Forums are a great source of information.

Dr Joseph Rizk, Sydney Plastic Surgeon prides himself on thoroughly explaining all outcomes of surgery. Here are 10 things you wish you knew before you had a breast augmentation consultation.

1. Go larger in size if possible

Boob greed is real. Many females don’t realise that the appearance of the implants will seem smaller over time. Most worry they will be too big and too fake. Plastic Surgeon, Dr Joseph Rizk will let you know the safest and largest implant you can have to give the desired look you are after. You might want to go slightly smaller. For some reason, many ladies wish they could have gone bigger even if they knew they couldn’t.

2. Make time for aftercare and seeing your surgeon

You factor time for the pre-surgery consultations but the aftercare is just as important. There is a protocol and you will need to take time off work and the follow-up will also include a consult at 1 year.

3. I need more time off work

Occasionally in a job like a hairdresser or a bartender and waitress, you will need to take more time off work if you can’t go back on light duties.

4. What bra can I wear and when?

No push-up bra and no wonder bra for at least 8 weeks. No underwire bra for 6 weeks. The wire can cause the wound to heal less than ideal. A tight bra can also be detrimental. Wear loose fitting bras post surgery. Dr Rizk will organise a medical bra for the first 1-2 weeks.

5. I can’t exercise for 6-8 weeks

This is a big one for some females. Exercise promotes blood flow and can cause extra bruising and swelling. The risk of falling because of stiffness will be undesirable. At 2 weeks you can do light walking or stationary exercise bike at a slow pace. Healing is the priority.

6. How awesome I can feel after breast augmentation

When done for the right reasons a breast augmentation can put you in a great headspace. It feels like a new you and you gain even more feminity. It puts a spring your step.

7. People will know

To the people that see you often or in intimate situations it is hard to hide. When you wear revealing clothes, people will know. Unless you wear padded bras for years beforehand then people know.

8. Implants don’t “drop and fluff” for months

“Drop and fluff” refers to the process of the skin below the nipple stretch and accommodating the new implant. Initially, the implants can seem high and super unnatural.

9. Things can go wrong

Although rare, you may encounter a complication. Having surgery under the care of a FRACS approved Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon is your best insurance to avoid these complications and if they occur to have an expert to recover you. Plastic Surgeons are the finishers, the doctors’ other doctors go to when they have problems.

10. I need to change them every 10 years or so.

Your surgeon should tell you this. Implants are not a lifetime device. The brand Dr Rizk uses has a 10-year warranty. You might be lucky and get longer from you current implants however they should be changed at some point. Routine follow up with your Plastic Surgeon at the 10-year mark will help remind you of this.
