What is Hair Transplant?

Hair transplant is a surgical procedure to add more hair to your scalp, eyebrow or beard which is thinning or balding.

It is performed by removing hair follicles from a donor area (back of scalp, beard or body) and planting them to the required area.

For hair transplant different techniques are available in the market. Most common method used today in Hair transplant are FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction).

FUT

FUT is also known as Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS).

During an FUT procedure, the surgeon removes a piece or strip of your scalp using a scalpel. The strip is usually 10 to 15 centimetres long depending on the number of grafts required and can extend from one ear to the other. The area where the strip is taken is then closed using stitches.

The strip is then further slivered and separated into grafts or units with the help of dissecting blades under a microscope. Once the entire strip is slivered and cut, the surgeon makes incisions on the scalp or the recipient area using needles or blades to which the grafts are inserted.

FUE

FUE, or Follicular Unit Extraction, is the latest methodology of harvesting the follicular unit grafts.

In FUE methodology, the individual follicular units are extracted one at a time from the donor area. This is performed using micro-punches of 0.85mm diameter, either manually or by a motorised device. The punch incises the skin surface around every hair follicle before they are carefully extracted with forceps by hand.

Dr. Joseph Rizk answers the question: ‘What is the recovery like for the FUE hair transplant procedure?

Difference between FUE & FUT

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

  • Individual FU’s extracted
  • Negligible scar
  • Quick healing
  • No damage or wastage

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

  • A strip of donor hair is removed
  • Linear scar in donor area
  • About a month for complete healing

FUE method (Follicular Unit Extraction)

FUE is the latest method used to harvest follicular units grafts for hair restoration in men

Almost two-thirds of men will experience some hair thinning or hair loss by the age of 35, but it can even occur during their early 20’s. There are several options available to restore and control hair loss.

There are two techniques currently available: FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). Here at Hair Transplant Clinics Australia, we offer the FUE technique for our patients.

In the FUE method, the individual follicular units are extracted one at a time from a donor area. This is performed using micro-punches which are 0.8mm in diameter, either manually or using a motorised device. The punch incises the skin surface around every hair follicle before they are carefully extracted with forceps. During the extraction, the removal of adjacent follicular units is avoided to prevent the appearance of a scar line.

A random or zigzag pattern is used, keeping 4 to 5 adjacent follicular units intact. Each hair follicle is carefully implanted, one by one, using a specialised implanter tool taking into account the angle, direction and depth to provide a natural-looking result. Throughout the procedure, the delicate hair follicles are stored in a special holding solution to maintain their temperature. The handling of the follicles is also kept to a minimum to ensure the highest success rate possible.
